How data from animals is helping scientists, robotics in infrastructure disaster prevention and water management in agriculture – these are
the stories covered in this issue of the World Economic Forum’s 3 Climate Trends newsletter, your guide to climate, nature and sustainability in an ever-changing world.
1. What #animals are telling us about climate change
Animals are revealing a lot about climate change through shifts in their behaviour and physiology as they adapt to the changing world.
Scientists are taking a closer look at three elements: studying changes in animal behaviour, whether this is mating patterns or animal
sounds; identifying the physical changes – often to appendages like beaks and flippers – that animals are undergoing as they try to adapt to a changing climate; and employing animals to help boost
environmental data collection.
The data from these investigations is being collected and analyzed by artificial intelligence and the resulting insights reveal the extent
of change and our intertwined relationship with nature.
The hope is that, with the help of animals, humans can use the insights gathered to find their own means to adapt and counter the worst of
the effects of the climate crisis. Learn more in this article.
2. These #robots are saving lives and preventing #environmental disasters
Gecko Robotics ' robots, during an inspection of an oil refinery tower in the US, found tiny cracks that
if left unchecked, would have caused an explosion.
Not only would it have taken down 60% of the facility's production, but it also would have put workers' lives at risk and caused
environmental destruction.
